'This piece, my third study of actor Robert Newton as Bill Sykes from the David Lean film ‘Oliver Twist’ interprets him in more striking and lighter colours, in contrast to darker and moodier previous versions. I've depicted the moment Sykes believes Fagin is headed to the gallows, and the visceral hatred and delight that appears on his face. 
I was struck by this moment due to the especially characterful expression on Newton’s face in this scene, possibly the mischievous sneer that foreshadows the actors iconic appearance as Long John Silver. For me it’s one of those moments where a facial expression sums up the character perfectly.'
