The Memory Train. 2008

The Memory Train explores the internal struggle of mental illness. The narrative of this portrait is about confronting and accepting the pain of the past in order to move forward.

The point of the colour palette I’ve used is to try and convey this process of working through the inner turmoil.

The effect of merging a second head with the main portrait is to flesh out the pain of the past and bring it to the surface, an important touch being a subtle but desperate scream, a cry for help that couldn’t be met. The central portrait, rigid and tense with closed eyes is forced to reflect on all this pain in order to cross the pain barrier.

The slim delicate shoulders imply intense vulnerability and stiff awkwardness. At present the body language is of someone in a regressed state and rigid fright, the violence from within suggested by the burning red. But the hints of glowing yellow light on the face implies hope at the end.
