Nocturne. Worcester Cathedral. 2006

Nocturne And The Enigma. Worcester Cathedral. 2006.

This painting is the last of a series of landscapes set in Worcester that use the narrative of the Mikhael Bulgakov novel the Master And Margharita.

This novel had a huge impact on me in my twenties because the way its written is very visually evocative and colourful, I wanted to use Worcester cathedral and the riverside area as the setting because I was drawn to the idea of supernatural events taking place there.

To me it was an apt setting for blending fantasy with reality for three reasons; the river that ran through it had a magical aura about it, it was where I regularly exhibited with the Riverside Arts Market, and because of the religious subtext of the novel, it seemed very apt to have a church as the centre piece.

In an understated way, I tried to suggest signs of an unsettling atmosphere without giving too many plot aspects of the book away. The ominous black cloud to the left that stops the scene completing itself suggests a hole into another world. The mist around the benches and the barely visible apparition implies the last trace of something sinister connected to this void. The moonlighted cathedral looks unnerving, and the facade of the stained glass window suggests a gigantic scream.

The unsuspecting man walks on, but his dog detects something is strange, and is veering off course to inspect the benches first.
