Tsunami 1. The Wave

The Wave is the first painting of the Tsunami triptych, interpreting the unsettling action of a tsunami. I was transitioning towards a looser and more experimental style, and attempting to portray the mood and narrative with the build up of texture.

The scene does not reflect or reference a factual tsunami and is simply a personal interpretation through artistic experimentation. By coincidence however it was painted shortly before the events of the earthquake and tsunami of Tohoku, Japan in 2011.

The textural build up went in many directions before settling on the chosen narrative and direction, this added to the expressive and heavily applied quality. The look is achieved through mixing acrylic and oil into a paste that resulted in creating rough, cracking textures like jagged rocks. This and the abstract nature of the colour give the scene a hazy quality that’s almost hallucinatory and nightmarish, like a frightening scene being observed in quick glimpses through fog or disturbed sleep.
