Architecturalism 1. Adolescent. 2009

'Architecturalism' as I termed it, was an interest in creating my own version of cubist style portraits by combining landscape and portraiture, using architecture and the detail of buildings as a textural template for the subjects.

For the narrative of this particular diptych I used the architecture of churches and castles as the basis because of visual factors and certain narrative merits; heavily textured exteriors, murkier colours, and violent connotations.

'Adolescence' as the title suggests represents a teen of pubescent age. I wanted to address the emotional difficulties and struggles of this transition from childhood to adulthood, and raise issues of mental health from personal experiences.

The inner torment is presented in a very jagged and awkward manner, the angular forms, sharp lines, muddy tones and crusty textures presents the mental torture as dank and all consuming, emotions brutally exposed.

The dividing bar of colour represents a partial doorway, to show the sense of shame and a desire to retreat to safety and comfort. The half in and half out nature of the composition implies the emotional conflict, on the one hand wanting to hide and on the other wanting to be accepted.
