The Isolationist. 2008
This painting is a very honest statement about me as an artist and person at the time.
It presents my isolation as both a positive and negative concept, as an artistic statement and an exploration of mental health.
I tried to convey the main emotional narrative of the piece by having any background disappear into total darkness to give centre stage to the portrait. The vibrancy of the head against the pitch black draws full attention to the multiple layers and narratives surrounding the isolation concept.
The intense yellow glow on the face reflects both a spot light like a one man theatre, and also a ray of light from within, as if the person has reached a moment of profound wisdom, realisation and inner peace.
The vibrancy of the red represents an internal violence and emotional turmoil that the gradually increasing inner torment is slowly burning away.
