Danae. Second Study. 2008

My interpretation of the greek legend of Danae, the mother of Perseus.

Imprisoned by her father, King Acrisius of Argos, because of a prophecy by an oracle who confided that his daughter would give birth to a son that would grow up to kill him, she is locked in a cell on the palace grounds, in which the greek god Zeus visits her and makes love to her in the form of a shower of gold.

I wanted to add a disturbing narrative to Danae’s solitary imprisonment by depicting her cell as pitch black. According to the myth her cell is actually luxurious and her needs as a prisoner are met, my interpretation however was to strip away the material environment that ultimately doesn’t matter when it doesn’t  take away the horrible reality of the life time of isolation. What’s real is that she is all alone.

Spotlighting her naked figure and the glow as the shower of gold envelopes her was my way of highlighting the touching intimacy and warmth between her and Zeus. I wanted to capture a strong sense of tenderness and light persevering through despair.
